The Impact of Ice and Snow on Your Roof
Winter storms can be very damaging to your roof. Ice dams form on the eaves creating leaks in your roof. Snow may slide off your roof causing problems with your gutters and material on your roof system. Cleaning your gutters and the snow off your roof can prevent such problems.
Ice Dams
Warm days and cold nights create ice dams due to the constant thawing and freezing of the snow. They are also formed through heat loss on a poorly d or poorly ventilated house. When formed these ice dams cause blockages of water leading to water backing up into the shingles eventually creating a leak in to your home.
Snow Build Up
If the snow on your roof is not cleared an avalanche effect may occur. This can cause damage to your gutters and rip material off your roof.
Preventing Snow Build up and Ice Dams
You can install electrical heating cable along the eaves of the roof, in the gutters and down the spouts. Installing de-icing cables will prevent ice dams from forming.
